Layback

Also known as: Recline

Pole Sits Intermediate

What is the Layback?

The layback is a move in which the torso leans back from a seated pose or knee hold, while keeping the support in the legs. It adds a dramatic body line to existing seated poses and requires good core control to keep the lean controlled.

How to do the Layback

  1. Begin from a stable pole sit or knee hold.

  2. Engage your core muscles before beginning the lean.

  3. Tilt your torso back slowly, joint by joint.

  4. Stop at a comfortable angle while keeping your breathing calm.

  5. Keep your arms relaxed or opened out to the sides for a clean line.

  6. Return to sitting upright slowly and with full control.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning back too quickly without engaging the core.
  • Holding your breath during the backward lean.
  • A leg support point that loosens as you lean.
