What is the Step Around?

The step around is a move in which you walk around the pole with a light grip, without lifting your feet off the floor. It is the first move that teaches how to combine grip with movement, and it serves as a natural transition between many other moves.

How to do the Step Around

  1. Stand beside the pole and grip it with one hand at shoulder height.

  2. Step gently around the pole while keeping a light contact with your hand.

  3. Keep your back straight and your gaze forward as you walk.

  4. Switch your gripping hand if the direction calls for it.

  5. Slow your pace as you approach the end of the circle around the pole.

  6. Stop in a stable stance as the move ends.

Common Mistakes

  • Gripping too strongly, which disrupts smooth movement.
  • Steps that are too large, which hurt your balance.
  • A gaze that drops to your feet instead of staying forward.
